James M. Leverett, affectionately known by his family as Baby James, was born August 20, 1933 to James Arthur and Asilee Leverett in Dermott, AR he was the ninth of ten children. His parents, two brothers and five sisters preceded him death. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Covetter Wiley and infant son Conte' Leverett.

James received his formal education in the Chicot County School System in Dermott, AR. In 1953 he joined the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1955. After leaving the Army he moved to Chicago, IL where he attended the Worsham College of Mortuary Science and graduated with honors in 1956.

On August 31, 1958 in Dermott, AR, James was united in Holy Matrimony toVoncele Williams, and they settled in Pine Bluff, AR. In 1966 he relocated his family to San Francisco, CA where he worked as an Embalmer at Bayview Mortuary under the guidance of Ellis H. Finley, and later at Bryant Mortuary under the guidance of Ralph Bryant.

James was a practicing Funeral Director and Embalmer for over 50 years. He owned and operated two very successful businesses, Bayview Mortuary in San Francisco, and Baker Mortuary in Oakland along with his business partners Alvin Bynum and Arthur Miller. He was very gifted and always made sure that the deceased and their families were treated with dignity and respect. It was often said that he made people look better in death than they did in life.

James was a member of Pentecostal Temple Church of God in Christ first under the leadership of Bishop B. R. Stewart, and presently under the leadership of Elder R. L. Smith where he served as Chairman of the Deacon and Trustee Boards. He also served as President of the Greater S.F. District Pioneer Department, and as President of the Deacons of the NCFJ. He served faithfully until his health no longer allowed him to.

James was a 32nd Degree Mason and Past Worshipful Master of Bayview Lodge #64. He was also a member of the Shriners and Golden State Consistory #295.

James was called home on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the Kaiser Deer Valley Medical Center in Antioch, CA.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of over 54 years, Voncele; daughter, Tangie Leverett; son, Adam Leverett; four grandchildren, Shonnie Martinez, Dante` Wiley (Amber), Kalesha Wiley (Kile) and Jaleesa Jackson; three great-grandsons, Robert Newt, Jr., Jordan Newt and Dante` "D. J." Wiley; two sisters, Asilee Owens and Blanche Doss; two sister in laws, Juanita Leverett and Margarete Leverette, god sister Mildred Wilson; adopted son Dan Scales (Brenda), and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
