Air Force Emblem

Ronald Jean Lawson was born on January 9, 1940 in Martinez, CA and raised in Pittsburg, CA. He was the fifth child of eight born to the late Elliott and Donia (Morgan) Lawson. Ronald accepted Christ early in his life, uniting with First Baptist Church of Pittsburg, CA.

Ron attended schools in Pittsburg, CA and graduated from Pittsburg Senior High in 1967. He belonged to several singing groups, including the Mondellos with whom he recorded an album called "A Thousand Years from Today." The group toured throughout California, opening for Little Richard and serving as back-up for popular artists like Little Willie Littlefield and Charles Brown.

After graduation, Ron enlisted in the Air Force (1957-1960), where he toured Europe (Spain & Morocco) while pursing boxing and of course, his greatest passion singing.

Ron met Guindell (Dell) Ratliff in 1954 at West Garrison Summer Recreational Center. After a few years of courtship, they united in holy matrimony in 1961. Yes, 53 years ago!

After his tenure in the military, Ron was employed with U.S. Naval Shipyard in San Francisco. He also continued his education at Diablo Valley College (DVC). For many years, Ron worked for the City of Pittsburg and City of Concord, before retiring in 2002. He and Dell enjoyed traveling the world together, their Friday date nights (dinner & movie), camping, snow trips with the kids, and relaxing while fishing. When the grandkids arrived, Papa Ron insisted on them learning how to fish and bait their own hooks. He spent a lot of time running around at the beckoned call for his grandkids. Whenever they called, he would come.

As a dedicated member of Stewart Memorial C.M.E. for the past 25 years, Ron was able to communicate his love of singing by devoting his time and talent to the church. In addition to singing in all the church choirs, he was active in the Men's Ministry and served as a trustee, responsible for taking care of the church property. He was dependable and always willing to assist, as the words "no" or "I don't know how" was never a part of his vocabulary.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents: Elliott and Donia; three sisters: Juanita, Evelyn and Carrie; one brother, Lawrence; and his only son, Ronnie.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory, his loving and devoted wife, Guindell; daughter Renee (Ahmad) of Oakley, CA ; three brothers; Elliott (Erma) of Hayward, CA, Henry (Sharon) of Dallas, TX, and Paul of Pittsburg, CA; one aunt, Bobbie of Detroit, MI; 10 grandchildren; eight great-children; one god son; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and loved ones.
