Robert Nathaniel Ellis was born on April 16, 1919 in Hooks, Texas to Sam Ellis and Caroline Ellis. He was the sixth child out of twelve born to this blessed union. Robert had nine brothers and two sisters. Robert received his education in Hooks, Texas. He joined Cedar Grove Baptist Church in 1938 where Reverend Smith was the Pastor. He had a special affinity for his beloved hometown, Hooks.

Robert Ellis moved to California in 1944 and settled in San Francisco, California. In California, he provided a solid, firm and Christian foundation for his family. Robert established a legacy of hard work, family values and integrity. His life was a living example of being a pillar in the community and a leader among men, at the same time exemplifying courage and bravery considering the social, political and economic climate at the time.

In 1954, he united with St. John Missionary Baptist Church where Reverend Morgan was the Pastor. He and his wife, Cathryn were faithful servants of the church.

Robert and his family settled in the Bayview district in San Francisco. He and his family bought their home in 1959. He and the neighbors created a special bond in the 1300 block of Palou Avenue.

Robert worked for the San Francisco Water Department until his retirement. He was rumored to be one of the first African-American laborers hired at the time.

On any given day, you would find Robert and a cadre of his brothers, cousins, children and friends playing dominoes.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia Forte-Ellis, the mother of Robert "Bobby" Ellis and Dorothy Ellis. Robert married Cathyrn Ellis and they had a successful union for forty seven years until her passing.

Robert was also preceded in death by his brothers: Ben, Adolph, O.D., Earl, Johnny, James and J.S. and his sisters: Althea and Emma.

He leaves to cherish his memories five generations of family members, including: children Robert "Bobby" Ellis (Lucretia), Dorothy (Ellis) Banks; siblings: Nonnie Ellis (Bea) Australia (Mary); grandchildren: Verna, Jackie (deceased), Arturnelle, Eric, Dionne, Sevaughn, Raeshawn, April, Keith and Glenn.

He will be cherished by a host of great (and great) grandchildren , nieces, nephews, cousins and esteemed family friends Ruth and Jay Wilkerson.
