Navy Emblem

Alfred Emmanuel Winston was born on September 1, 1930 in Boomer, West Virginia to Odell Richard Winston and Maude Ora Saunders Winston. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Walter, Shelby, Richard, Ira and his sisters Ellen and Carol.

Alfred accepted Christ at an early age and upon graduation from Simmons High School in Boomer, he went immediately into the military where he served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1951. After his honorable discharge he moved to California where he worked at various City and State jobs in San Francisco. He attended Heald College of Engineering, and was hired as a Configuration Manager at Ford Aerospace where he worked until retirement. Alfred's previous marriage produced three daughters: Vanessa and Vernell, both deceased, and Carole.

On September 1, 1974 Alfred married Clifford Chitman. They began a life of shared interests and united with Emmanuel Baptist Church in San Jose. In his many years of Christian service Al served as Sunday school teacher and church treasurer. After their move to Brentwood he joined First Baptist Church in Pittsburg. He had a heart for working with young men and mentoring family members. He and friend, James Hayes, outfitted a young black Little League team in Menlo Park that would not have a chance to excel without their support. Al was always willing to help and advise others. He was an avid bowler, enthusiastic and imaginative cook, and enjoyed listening to good music and traveling the high seas.

Alfred departed this life on September 11, 2014. He leaves to remember him with love and laughter, his wife Clifford, his daughter Carole Winston Roger (Robert), granddaughter Sydney (Tristan), one brother William Lindy (Carolyn), two sisters: Yvonne Winston and Joan Etta Bailey, sister-in-law Alyce, Eloise, McJohnnie, Louise, Gloria and Bettye and a host of nieces and nephews and godchildren.
